Season 2 of Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” had us deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. being split in two; one helmed by Director Phil Couslon, and the other led by Director Robert Gonzales (played by Edward James Olmos). In the end, they both merge, with Phil Coulson leading as the main Director.
We also see the rise of Inhumans, a group of humans who gain supernatural powers when they are exposed to the “Terrigen Mist.” Agent Skye, whose name is revealed to be Daisy Johnson (who also goes by Quake in the comic version), is one of the Inhumans revealed. She gained the powers of controlling sound waves with precision.
However, that season ended with Agent Simmons being swallowed by the “Monolith”, a mysterious artifact S.H.I.E.L.D. captured.
At the start of the episode, we see someone who appears to be one of the Inhumans, with powers that melt objects around him. He ends up running away from a secret black-ops group that isn’t HYDRA or S.H.I.E.L.D. Right as he’s about to get captured, agents Hunter, Mac, and Daisy rescue him. They try and rehabilitate him and control his powers, but achieve no success.
Meanwhile, we see Fitz in Morocco trying to find a way to rescue Simmons. Growing mad in trying to rescue her, despite the others saying otherwise, he tries to negotiate with Moroccan arms dealers, only for it to go awry. Fitz starts to unravel as he tries everything to make the Monolith work.
At the same time, Coulson is busy trying to find out the black-ops organization detaining Inhumans, eventually locating this new organization’s leader, Rosalind Price. They discover they are both working for the same purpose, with Price willing to go further than Coulson by vivisecting and examining captured Inhumans.
Encountering issues helping the newfound Inhuman, Daisy and Mac try to recruit Lincoln, another Inhuman from last season, only to be interrupted by Lash, another Inhuman, who is hunting other Inhumans. They try to subdue him, but only manage to drop him down with Daisy’s sonic powers.
At the tag of the episode, we see someone running in a barren wasteland, revealing it to be Simmons, wandering for who knows how long. In the background we see she’s not on Earth, but somewhere far, far away.
So far, the season is setting up the expansion of Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (here’s hoping we get Kamala Khan in the MCU). We have yet to see Agents Ward or May, but considering Ward defected to HYDRA, and Agent May is currently missing, what’s in store for them is unknown.
