News: Disney shuts down LucasArts!

There is a grave disturbance in the force.  It was as though a thousand voices cried out, and were suddenly silenced.  We will remember the hard work provided by the developers of games such as the Monkey Island series and the Sam & Max adventures.

What we’ve heard from our sources is that Disney is going to be shrugging off the gaming arm of Lucasarts. We’ve always been curious as to where Disney might take the Lucas franchise.  Here’s the statement released by a Disney representative:

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games…as a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

At this point, we only have a simple question to ask: “What will happen to the games? the team?”

A representative from LucasArts released this statement to Game Informer:

“It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans…we still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing.”

We haven’t heard of any cancelled games from the company and as for the fates of the highly anticipated Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, we’re assuming that Disney will pick up on the hype since these are the ones that has the crowds roaring.  We also don’t know the what will happen to the companies that have licenses to produce Lucas marked games such as The Old Republic or any other Star Wars and Lucas franchises, but we will keep a close watch on Disney’s next steps in advancing the Lucas name.
