So if you’re like me, you grew up playing games like Runescape, Neopets, Marapets, etc. You probably even played Dragon Fable, or the original AdventureQuest! Well, Artix and the gang are back with a new game and are looking for (y)our help. They’ve got a Kickstarter campaign up for a new game, AdventureQuest 3D, which they say is “AdventureQuest re-imagined as a 3D MMORPG that lets you play online with your friends from your phone, tablet or PC.”
We reached out to the man, the myth, the legend Adam Bohn, better known as Artix Krieger and he was gracious enough to give us a little bit of his time and answer some of our questions!
K: Who in the world are you? (Full disclosure: Artix wrote this question himself. We’re not really sure why but we included it because we liked it)
A: Hiya! Thank you for interviewing me. I am Artix. My studio creates games including AdventureQuest Worlds, DragonFable, EpicDuel, MechQuest, AdventureQuest, Battle Gems, Dragons and Undead Assault. We are currently running a Kickstarter campaign for our new game, AdventureQuest 3D at www.AQ3D.com
K: What was your inspiration for the original AdventureQuest?
A: Way back in the pre-internet days, I was a huge fan of the BBS Door game Legend of the Red Dragon. It was an all-text game. The owner of the BBS (computers that you dialed into to play) gave me access to the game and I creatively constructed a war against an undead army and a dragon. A week later, I was walking down the hall at school when a boy ran up to me and said, “Hey! Are you the guy that made that undead war in the game!? That was SOOOO COOOL!!” I felt like I made something special for him and the other players of the game. Many years later, I wrote AdventureQuest trying to recreate those amazing experiences that we can share together. While it had the spirit of that old text game, I drew and animated the characters making it visual, and of course making it playable in the web browser at www.BattleOn.com . The wars are still my favorite part.
K: How did you come up with all the names for the characters? Twilly, Artix, Cysero, etc.
A: I created the name Artix in 5th grade. Another boy was teaching us how to play Dungeons and Dragons during a special school “learning and games” day. I used the name Artix in every game I have played since. It is even my middle name on my High School Diploma.
Cysero chose his name for…. you know, I have no idea. He probably pulled random letters out of a sock.
Twilly, LOL… Twilly was a real life player of a game from a long time ago. He was a friend. His actual character name was Twilight, but he role played such a cuddly adorable mascot character I often thought he was a real life muppet. The girls REALLY liked him. So I named the first moglin after him to honor him and carry on the tradition of his cuddly craziness. He was really grateful when I contacted him to tell him about it.
K: What got you into making video games?
A: I have always loved video games. I was asked: “If you like video games so much, why don’t you just make one?”
K: Cake or pie?
A: Pie. The cake is a lie.
K: What has been your favorite universe/IP you’ve created so far?
A: Chuckling That is like asking a father to name his favorite child. I love all of the games we have created.
K: What is your favorite item in any of your games and why?
A: I like the Xlogramonicon — because no one has found it… yet.
K: For your backers who have upgraded accounts on any of your games will there be special rewards for them?
A: If you have backed the Kickstarter for AdventureQuest 3, then OMG! THANK YOU! We are making really good progress to our goal. We are also currently submitted to Steam via their Greenlight program. If you have upgraded in our games in the past, then you probably know we have a tradition of letting you link those accounts for additional goodies later on. But that is always a secret, and always done after the game is live and stable. So… O_O shhhhhh.
Personally speaking, I’ve upgraded my accounts on a couple of their games. I have an old AdventureQuest account that’s an X-Guardian, I’m also a MechQuest founder, and I think I have a third upgraded account but I can’t remember. My friends and I would play AQ Worlds after school. So I basically grew up with Twilly and the moglins, Artix (the character) and Cysero. So when I saw they were making a Kickstarter for a new game I knew that I had to talk to them and get them to do an interview with us, and Artix was happy to do so.
As of the time of writing this article they’re at $183,704 pledged of their $200,000 goal, and Kicktraq has them trending with an estimated funding amount of about $343,000! The really cool thing about this project is that they are making it cross platform so whether you’re at home on your custom built PC with maxed out specs and a sick case or are playing on your iPhone you can go and fight monsters with your friends.
It’s always nice to see small independent studios like Artix Entertainment succeed, so check out their Kickstarter campaign here, and battle on!
