Preliminary Review: InSoul Footwear

InSoul Dress Sneakers…A Refreshing Take On Two Old Classics?

*Disclaimer* Important note here, I am a backer of this Kickstarter campaign and this is a preliminary review of the Sneakers from the information I have been provided by the folks at Team InSoul as the shoe is not yet public.

As per usual I was perusing Kickstarter and came across many projects that didn’t catch my eye but of course, I found one that did, InSoul’s. Checked out the project and fell in love with the designs, these shoes look really cool. I reached out to them at first with no intention to do a write up about them here on MGR, but to ask questions to find out more about the project.

Me: I am very interested in pledging to your project but I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit more about the quality of material used?

Them: We have a patent pending chassis/outsole construction that conforms to your foot in the same way a dress shoe does. Sneakers tend to use carbon fiber or plastics that we have replaced with dress shoe materials and old school construction methods. This is why you see leather on the bottom side of the shoe (saddle leather).

Me: Would these be ok for walking around all the time in and the occasional running?
Them: I would not run in these shoes though…. they are more fashion than performance. Maybe you could jog to the fridge from your couch… 🙂

Me: That’s fine. As long as they can actually be used to walk in as one of

three pairs of everyday shoes. You mentioned that the shoe shouldn’t be ran in and that it was more fashion then performance. I have a question that I think you might have missed. They can still actually be used as a shoe right? One of an alternating set of shoes. And also what kind of support do they offer?

Them: Hi Sam,

Great questions. Yes the shoe is more fashion but can absolutely be worn as an alternative or even your main shoe as long as you don’t try to perform any athletic sports in them. They are super comfortable and you could wear them every day. The shoe is built in the same manner as a sneaker so they will have the same support as a cup sole (Air Force 1) Only difference being the style and internal fashion components that mold to your feet over time like a dress shoe.

Me: Thank you for your time with answering my questions. I have a few more for you:

How do the InSoul’s go together? Welted? Or glued? McKay stitch?

Do you make your own soles?

Once my sole is run through could you supply me with a new one?

Shoe maintenance?

Them: Hi Sam-

Thanks again for all your support.

* Regarding the full construction details, we would like to keep that confidential at this phase in our process, I’m sure you can understand and respect that.

* Once your soles run through we suggest that you take them to a nice local shoe repair shop that is experienced in replacing soles as well as skilled in other shoe maintenance needs. We will work with our customers on individual special needs basis, however do not intend to be in the business of repair/replacement.

* Shoe maintenance – Please follow standard & recommend Dress Shoe Care. You can google “how to take care of dress shoes”

Me: I absolutely understand and respect that you want to keep construction details secret, I was only asking at the recommendation of Willie’s Shoe Service, to make sure it is a good quality construction.

Them: If Willies is your shoe repair shop of choice, than you will be all set! They are outstandingly skilled and will be able to help you take care of any of you shoe repair need…including InSoul’s DRESS SNEAKER!

Me: Perfect,

Thanks! Looking forward to getting my hands on a pair of InSoul High Tops!

——————————————————————————————————————

These shoes look great and the folks at InSoul really seem to have a passion and care about the shoe, they aren’t cheap but the good things in life usually aren’t. Right now they’re sitting at around 64% of their $60,000 goal and have about 15 days left…The odds are pretty good that they will make their goal and personally I would love to see that…Because I really want a pair of those High Tops.

From the images I have seen and the information they have given me and from what I got from Willie’s Shoe Service here in LA the construction seems sturdy and the design is really sleek. Obviously I can’t do a proper hands on review at this point in time but once I get my pair(assuming the kickstarter goes off without a hitch) I will do a more in depth and hands on review.

Until then, check out their press release below.

InSoul Footwear is Bridging the Gap Between Expensive Dress Shoes and Athletic Sneakers Offering a New Kind of Style – DRESS SNEAKER

Los Angeles, CA – February 13, 2014 – InSoul Footwear is bridged the gap between expensive dress shoes and athletic sneakers. This Brand is crafting a new style of shoes, parallel to no other and one that only gets better with age. A Kickstarter campaign to fund InSoul Footwear’s “DRESS SNEAKER”, is currently underway.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/insoul/insoul-dress-sneaker

Deadline – February 28th, 2014

Goal Amount – $60,000+

Reason – To open their initial round of production

Industry leading footwear designer, Sean O’Shea, announces the launch of the original DRESS SNEAKER on Kickstarter. The brand’s positioning is unique and the footwear style is innovative with a rich and classic appeal. Quality and craftsmanship are deep rooted components in the product. The DRESS SNEAKER itself is built on the chassis of an authentic dress shoe and styled with the look and feel of an American sports sneaker. Rooted in American sports styling and fused with high quality – hand crafted elements of a rich dress shoe brand, InSoul’s design esthetic offers a timeless appeal.

The brand’s name InSoul is an obvious play on the word “insole” but spelled “soul” to embrace the tie between music culture and the footwear culture. Hip Hop music is one of many elements associated with sneaker culture, but InSoul seeks to celebrate the “soul music” that many artists take their inspiration (samples) from. Using this foundation will give the young supporters and their parents common ground to enjoy the product and brand’s lifestyle.

Founder and designer, Sean OShea has over 15 years of experience in the footwear industry. He has designed for several major brands including Nike, Adidas, Converse and Ralph Lauren, just to name a few. Sean began developing the DRESS SNEAKER in 2008. He reached out to a friend at an expensive dress shoe factory and worked with them to create a sneaker using all of the quality and craftsmanship used when constructing a dress shoe. The beauty behind the design was for the shoe to appear like a sneaker upon first glance, however with a closer second look one would see the details of a shoe which could only be hand made by skilled shoe maker/cobbler.

InSoul Footwear launched a Kickstarter campaign on January, 28th in order to crowdsource fund to take the DRES SNEAKER from final prototypes through it’s initial production run. The Kickstarter campaign will run until February 28th, with the goal of raising $60,000+.
