This episode is part 1 of a 2 part special and we get introduced to 2 new characters. Maggie Esmerelda (Emma Roberts) and Stanley (Dennis O’ Hare) are both con artists who, at the beginning, of the episode try to sell a fake baby Sasquatch to The American Museum of Morbidity. The curator sees through them and tells them that if they want to sell something to the museum, Freaks’ body parts sell for a lot of money. Stanley gets the idea that it’s time to head out to Florida. Interesting!
We have yet another antagonist added into the mix. There’s a superstition going around the camp that if they perform on Halloween, a freak from long ago who killed himself, Edward Mordrake, will appear and take you away to hell. Edward Mordrake had a face on the back of his head that was always whispering malicious things to him. He tried to kill it but he couldn’t. He ended up killing his entire troupe and himself because the face told him to.
Everyone at the camp is convinced that he is going to show up. Elsa refuses to believe this, and practices her singing on stage. Wouldn’t you know, he shows up. I really like how creative they’re getting with this season because its not just people are who physically freaky but people who are also mentally freaky. It preys on the mind and shows the true nature of people. I liked this episode because we have more antagonists now but I was hoping for something more sinister than con artists. I was expecting a mad scientist who creates freakier creatures from already freaky things. That would have been cool.
