2016: A Look Back

There’s no denying that 2016 was a difficult year. With the world going through several different issues, and so many amazing celebrities dying, it’s hard to remember anything good that happened this year. However, one of the best things about being a nerd is that you have smaller things to enjoy in times of doubt, such as movies, TV shows, and video games. 2016 had a lot of that to offer, and there will of course be more of those smaller things in the upcoming year as well.

We had the releases of awesome games such as Overwatch or Battlefield 1. We witnessed Iron Man and Captain America engage in an epic battle on the big screen. Rouge One came out and told the Star Wars story that was never told before. Marvel comics released Ironheart—Iron Man’s female counterpart. DC comics released a rebirth of its entire universe with the New 52 series. We were given new shows such as Westworld, Stranger Things, and Luke Cage. Sure, DC hasn’t gotten any better with their live action movies but their TV shows still hold strong.

2017 has a lot to offer for us in the geek community as well. All the new shows that I mentioned will be renewed for a second season, along with the Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Rick and Morty, and BoJack Horseman. It does contain a lot of unnecessary movie sequels, including Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Cars 3, and yes, a fifth Transformers. However, at the same time, it contains some that we’re looking forward to. I’m super excited for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, while others are looking forward to Star Wars episode 8, and (arguably) a second Blade Runner.

I honestly don’t know what the future holds. I don’t think anybody can accurately say what the next few years will be like either. 2016 was difficult and scary a lot of the time, but we have to move on with our lives. We’ll have all the little things to enjoy in case things turn chaotic. If there’s anything about this year or next year that I haven’t mentioned, feel free to mention it below. Please take care of yourselves and the ones you care about, and may the force be with all of you.
